ARRESTED (MDC-N President Welshman Ncube)
There are reports that the President of the Movement for Democratic Change Prof Welshman Ncube has been arrested.
He is the President of the Movement for Democratic Change, a Principal in the Inclusive Government and since February 2009 he has been the Minister of Industry and Commerce. He was elected as a member of the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe for Bulawayo North East in the 2000 election and served in the House of Assembly until 2008. Ncube is an academic lawyer who has been Professor of Law at the University of Zimbabwe from 1992.Also arrested with him are the Secretary General Priscila Misihairabwi – Mushonga, Deputy Secretary General Moses Mzila Ndlovu, Treasurer General Paul Themba Nyathi, National Organising Secretary Qhubani Moyo, National Secretary for Recruitment Rita Ndlovu, Deputy Director of Strategy and Implementation Joshua Mhambi, Secretary for Information and Publicity Nhlanhla Dube, the Youth Secretary General Discent Collins Bhajila, the Deputy Youth National Secretary for Defence Mbuso Fuzwayo, the Deputy National Youth Organising Secretary Celani Ncube, the Woman Assembly National Organising Secretary Anastacia Chikuni, the Provincial Chairman for Matabeleland North Jealous Sansole and some other members of the party.
The MDC leadership was travelling to Victoria Falls where they were addressing a party meeting, they are currently detained in Hwange Police Station and not yet charged.
Ncube is instrumental in the talks for the Zimbabwe unity government and is a principal representing the smaller faction of the MDC. In 2011 after his party elected him to the presidency, Robert Mugabe refused to swear him in as the Deputy Prime Minister of the state as agreed in the Global Political Agreement. When the ZANU-PF–MDC national unity government was sworn in on February 13 2009, Ncube became Minister of Industry and Commerce.
