At least ten MDC-T delegates to the MDC-T Third National Congress have been arrested in the last two days in Kariba, Mashonaland West province on allegations of holding an illegal meeting.
The ten, who include the MDC-T’s Mashonaland West Secretary, Greenwich Ndanga, were arrested on Monday and today in the resort town and are being held at Kariba Police Station.
The arrests are a clear sign that the police and Zanu PF are trying to disturb this week’s MDC-T Congress that will be held at Barborfields Stadium from 28 to 30 May.
The Zimbabwean police banned the MDC from holding any rallies or gatherings, according to their representatives. The MDC-T added that the ban extends to holding meetings at their offices or homes too. Over the past few weeks police have also increased their clamp-down on civic groups, arresting many activists. Observers say is an attempt by ZANU PF to protect Mugabe from any possible North African style anti-government revolts
The Congress is being held under the theme: “The MDC-T Third National Congress – United, Winning – The People’s Covenant to Real Change”.
